Understanding the changes in land use and coverage associated with the growing demand for natural resources consolidates cause and effect relationships on a wide space-time scale. Thus, the understanding and monitoring of land use and coverage is fundamental for understanding the patterns of space organization and for the sustainable planning of environments and the definition of public policies. The change in the coverage of environments associated with the growing demand for natural resources induces terrestrial ecosystems to undergo several changes, consolidating cause and effect relationships on a wide space-time scale. Thus, the understanding and monitoring of land use and coverage is fundamental for understanding the patterns of space organization and for the sustainable planning of environments. In this sense, the objective of this work is to diagnose the main types of land use and coverage in the municipality of Senhor do Bonfim - BA over the years 1986, 1996, 2009 and 2017. For this diagnosis, orbital images were used as a basis of the LANDSAT Satellite, integrated and processed in a Geographic Information System environment, through the hybrid supervised classification. The results obtained attest to the predominance of the Caatinga Shrub and demonstrate the gradual growth of agricultural crops, urban areas and forests on hillsides. In the end, the work carried out intends to collaborate to studies of landscape evolution and to help better planning proposals for the use and coverage of municipalities located in tropical semi-arid regions.
