The overall objectives of this work were to develop a database containing information on the technical performance and reliability of PV systems in desert climates and to provide a concrete set of answers to the questions that have to be addressed in order to understand the challenges associated with operating PV, as well as to improve the operation and economic output of photovoltaic power systems in Algerian Sahara. This study was carried out at the research unit of renewable energy in Saharan middle, Adrar, Algeria. The evaluation usually consists of I-V curves measured in situ and visual inspections. The studied PV modules have been subjected to long-term outdoor exposure for over 11 years. PV modules were often exposed to extraordinary constraints; extreme temperatures (with peaks around 63 degrees C outdoors in July), high illumination (exceeding 1000 W/m(2)), and sandstorm. The experimental analysis revealed some defects, such as an increase in cell series resistance and physical material defects.
