Seasonal and interannual analysis of the dynamic of suspended fluxes in the wadi Boukiou watershed (North West Algeria)

To better understand the impact of hydroclimatic and geomorphological factors on solid transport in semi-arid Mediterranean environments at seasonal and interannual scales, we used data on the hydro-sedimentary regime of wadi Boukiou watershed (North West Algeria) during the observation period from 1972/1973 to 2004/2005. This approach revealed the magnitude of solid transport during periods of active erosion during the year, when the flood contribution is 74%, over the spring season. The cumulative curve of the annual solid flows carried during floods was marked by very irregular progressions relative to that of liquid inputs. The decade 1978/1979-1989/1990 marks the most productive level in solid load with a cumulative 54% solid contribution over the 33 years of observation. By calculating the empirical statistical distribution of solid flows over the study period, the 50th and 95th percentiles of their distribution were defined. Over 50% of the measurement period, flows do not exceed 4% of the estimated average annual flow of 50,740 tons. On the other hand, for 5% of the time, about 18 days per year, they are greater than 70%. These results show the aggression of the rare showers on soils vulnerable to irregular climatic variations. They will help the decision-makers in future hydraulic developments in the region.
