Humans have lived on arid soils for millennia. Arid soils are important to humans for livestock grazing, irrigated agriculture, and urban development. In many arid regions of the world, human land use has resulted in desertification and diminishing groundwater supplies, both of which are increasingly important social and scientific issues as the human population increases.
