With the aim of characterizing two soils under melon crop at Tocuyo River, Lara state, two production units were selected, one with gravity irrigation and other with dripping irrigation. The physical and chemical properties were determined. Also, yields in melon crop were measured. The soil under the melon crop with gravity irrigation was deep with high micro-porosity percentage, and the soil with dripping irrigation was less deep, stony and with high phosphorous percentage. Yields were medium with values from 21 and 22.5 Mg . ha(-1) in soils with dripping and gravity irrigation, respectively, which do not correspond to the soil fertility.
