Non-provisioning services include an array of benefits from ecosystems other than the direct material benefits or products. They include regulating services, cultural ones and supporting services. Examples of each of these are considered in this chapter in relation to the arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa and their role in assisting to alleviate or mitigate poverty. The services considered are soil fertility, cultural and spiritual, ecotourism, and biodiversity. For each example, we summarise current literature and case studies to examine their importance in local livelihoods, but especially of the poor. In each instance, clear evidence can be found as to the importance of these provisioning services in the livelihoods of the poor. Consequently, in situations where these services are diminished or compromised, the well-being of the poor is undermined, increasing their already vulnerable livelihoods. For each service we also explore the trends in supply of the service and what might be the main drivers of change. Examples of successful management interventions to improve or secure supplies for the poor are presented to illustrate that there are solutions that can benefit the poor and hence reduce poverty.
