2010 LIVELIHOODS AND VULNERABILITY IN THE ARID AND SEMI-ARID LANDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA: EXPLORING THE LINKS BETWEEN ECOSYSTEM SERICES AND POVERTY ALLEVIATION 2010 null(卷), null(期), (221-249页)
Combining the simultaneous goals of promoting human well-being through securing ecosystem services requires a new way of thinking and acting on behalf of policy analysts, decision-makers and practitioners. Thus, the capacity of the existing institutions and agencies is crucial. This chapter comments on such capacities throughout the region, based largely on discussions held in each country. Capacity is strong around certain individual ecosystem services, weak around others, but in all instances largely sectoral in structure, approach and operations. Consequently, national and international agencies will need to implement mechanisms to address the capacity shortfalls. Simultaneously, certain information gaps need to be addressed, which are outlined in this chapter. Lastly, we consider the way forward providing a number of requirements to develop understanding, structures and processes that will help optimise the links between the management of ecosystem services and the well-being of the inhabitants of the arid and semi-arid lands of the region.
