Red beds formed in superaqueous oxidation paleoenvironments have given rise to extraordinary landscapes and landforms, many of which are widely recognized as significant geoheritage sites worldwide. Among these, several have attained global prominence and national representativeness, standing as iconic symbols of geological and geomorphic wonder. Notable examples include Danxiashan UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) in Southeast China and Purnululu National Park in Western Australia-two distinguished red beds geoheritage sites in the northern and southern hemispheres, officially designated as sister parks in 2014. Although both sites are internationally recognized, systematic geological and geomorphic comparisons remain scarce. Purnululu is renowned for its striking tower landscapes, distinguished by algae-induced banding developed within Devonian sandstones and conglomerates. This geological distinctiveness contributed to its inscription as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2003. In contrast, Danxiashan is celebrated for its dramatic cliffy escarpments carved from reddish, conglomerate-dominated clastic rocks of the Cretaceous Period, along with its intricate cavernous weathering features-attributes that earned it World Heritage status in 2010. This study provides a systematic comparison of the two sites, examining their geological frameworks, geomorphic characteristics, landscape evolution, geoheritage significance, management practices, geoconservation strategies, and current challenges. Such an analysis is essential for advancing research on red-bed geomorphology, supporting the development of geotourism and geoeducation, and enriching global scholarly discourse on the evolution of landscapes and landforms within coarse-grained clastic rock formations.
