Late Pleistocene/Holocene geomorphological dynamics in a semi-arid watershed in the Borborema highlands, Northeastern Brazil

This study examines a sector of the Brazilian semi-arid region, characterized by Proterozoic crystalline basement outcrops and a limited presence of Quaternary sediments. In this setting, depositional loci for fluvial and colluvial sedimentation are influenced by local structural features that serve as sediment traps. The thin sedimentary cover poses challenges for reconstructing ancient morphostratigraphic frameworks. Notably, potential sediment storage areas are associated with shear zones that have experienced repeated reactivation during the Cenozoic, subsequently creating accommodation spaces for sediment accumulation. The research is centered on the Riacho do Meio Watershed, located in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco on the Borborema Highlands. A morphostratigraphic approach was employed to analyze fluvial and colluvial deposits, facilitating the differentiation between fluvial and hillslope units as well as the identification of potential interdigitations within these systems. This stratigraphic analysis was further enhanced through the integration of geochronological, geochemical, sedimentological, and mineralogical techniques, which allowed for the temporal placement of depositional units and the recognition of distinct paleoclimatic phases marked by the mixing of materials exhibiting varying degrees of geochemical and mineralogical maturity. The findings indicate that the study area has been significantly shaped by Quaternary climatic instability, with colluvial-alluvial sedimentation events documented from the Penultimate Interstadial (Marine Isotope Stage 3) through the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), as well as during the transition from the Pleistocene to Holocene and into the Late Holocene.
