Adaptive behavior of gundi (Ctenodactylus gundi) in arid region and responses to anthropogenic impacts

Human-driven changes, such as quarrying and urbanization, are altering wildlife behavior and habitat use, particularly in arid regions. This study examines the behavioral responses of the North African rodent gundi (Ctenodactylus gundi) to two contrasting habitats in Matmata Mountains of Tunisia: a natural rocky environment and an artificial site created from quarry-extracted rocks. Over 20 visits to each site, we monitored gundi activity according to season, age class, and time of day to assess responses to anthropogenic changes. Gundis in the artificial habitat showed consistently higher activity levels and larger group sizes (up to 18 individuals vs. 14 in the natural site). Activity was influenced by temperature and time of day, with peak activity observed at moderate temperatures (18-25 degrees C). In natural habitats, activity dropped above 30 degrees C, while the artificial site maintained more stable activity patterns year-round, likely due to improved shelter and food availability. Vigilance was higher in the natural site, with flight initiation distances shorter (11.79 m vs. 40.75 m), indicating greater habituation to humans in the artificial habitats. Juveniles in the artificial site displayed increased movement and foraging activity. These results highlight the gundi's behavioral flexibility in response to habitat alteration and emphasize the importance of considering microhabitat features and behavioral adaptation to anthropogenic structures in conservation planning for arid environments.
