Characterization and ordination of the Juniperus angosturana scrub in the Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo

Juniperus angosturana R.P. Adams is a species endemic to Mexico that has been little studied from an ecological perspective. Its southern geographical distribution limit is located in the Mezquital Valley, a region subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. In this context, this study analyzed the composition and structure of communities dominated by J. angosturana in order to understand the environmental factors that influence their appearance. To describe the vegetation structure of these communities, the point-centered quadrant method was used to calculate the structural values of shrub and tree species. Plant associations were delimited using cluster analysis. Likewise, a Canonical Correspondence Analysis was applied to evaluate the influence of environmental and edaphic variables on the structure and floristic composition. As a result, 4 associations dominated by Juniperus angosturana were identified, whose structural differentiation showed a strong correlation with soil characteristics, particularly texture, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus concentrations, as well as pH.
