A Comprehensive Review of Leachate Contaminations in the Arabian Gulf Region

This review provides a first-of-its-kind regional synthesis of leachate profiles across seven Gulf nations, identifying a unique hydro-climatic shortcut where hyper-arid conditions and shallow aquifers synergistically accelerate groundwater contamination. We provide a critical meta-analysis of non-threshold heavy metals and coliform bacteria, establishing a baseline for regional environmental policy. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission potentials and air pollution caused by landfill/leachate activities, including the current mitigation strategies, were also reviewed. The findings show that the leachate contains high concentration levels of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Ni except Hg, whereas Cd and Pb were found having the highest concentrations. We found that coliform bacterial characterization has not been well studied by Arabian Gulf countries except Oman. The groundwater and soils were severely contaminated with As, Cr, Pb, and Ni, while Cd and Hg were reported either as unavailable or present in very low concentrations. Landfill leachate is a potential source of high CO2 and CH4 emission levels. Finally, it appeared that GIS-based multicriteria approach is the most common strategy used to manage leachate/landfills in Arabian Gulf countries. We recommend long-term spatiotemporal leachate monitoring, epidemiological/health risk assessment, and integration of leachate management strategies into future urban development plans.
