Investigation, Evaluation and Geoconservation of the Yardang Landforms in Dahaidao Region, Hami Basin, Xinjiang, NW China

Yardang landforms are a type of geomorphic geoheritage primarily shaped by wind erosion. They are often found in arid and semi-arid inland regions and attract a large number of tourists due to their spectacular shapes. The yardang landforms cluster of the Dahaidao area is located in the Hami Basin, similar to 170 km away from Hami City, NW China. Detailed surveys and assessments of the yardang landforms in this region have been relatively limited. This study integrates satellite remote sensing, drone aerial photography, and fieldwork to identify the characteristics, distribution range, and evaluation of yardang remnants. The results indicate that the development of the yardang landforms in survey area can be divided into five stages: embryonic stage, adolescent stage, mature stage, recession stage and decline stage. The shapes of yardang landforms are predominantly ridge, castle, and wall shapes, followed hummock, seal and pyramid shapes. Three-dimensional modeling and virtual reality panoramic image production of yardang landforms were carried out based on the collected data, and rational tourist routes were designed. This study provides a great significance for the comprehensive promotion and protection of yardang landforms as well as a positive role in the sustainable economic development of inland areas.
