Spatial coupling of landscape resistance and socioecological threats to endangered Punjab Urial in the semi-arid Potohar Plateau

  • Wild ungulates in South Asia face mounting pressures from poaching, habitat fragmentation, and expanding human development, particularly in ecotones like Pakistan's Potohar Plateau. The Punjab Urial (Ovis vignei punjabiensis), an endemic and endangered wild sheep, typifies this crisis. Despite its protected status, conservation efforts are hampered by fragmented habitats, weak enforcement, and minimal integration of spatial and community-based data. This study investigates the spatial distribution, poaching intensity, habitat connectivity, and community perceptions surrounding Punjab Urial across six districts in the Potohar region. Using ArcGIS kernel density estimation, three core habitat-patch hotspots were identified, mostly in the central Salt Range. Poaching hotspots, especially in Khushab, Mianwali, and Jhelum, overlapped with Urial populations, revealing key enforcement gaps. Circuitscape-based resistance modeling showed that viable corridors are limited to the central Salt Range, while northern areas face high landscape resistance due to urbanization. Survey data from 240 respondents identified firearms and live capture as the main poaching methods, with meat, poverty, and trophy hunting as key motivations. Highways, tourism, and fencing were noted as major movement barriers. The study highlights spatially variable ecological and social threats and calls for integrated, landscape-scale conservation strategies that align protected area planning with community engagement and corridor protection.
