Permanent plots offer a standardized framework for long-term biodiversity monitoring. Here, we integrated standardized avian surveys, with the extended specimen concept, to enhance the scientific value of biodiversity data. We established a RAPELD sampling module and 10 permanent plots in the Caatinga Dry Forest at the Raso da Catarina Ecological Station, northeastern Brazil. Our goals included: i) conducting avian surveys; ii) obtaining biological samples; iii) establishing a long-term monitoring program; iv) training students and local actors; and v) developing a data sharing framework. We recorded 121 bird species using different surveying methods. Autonomous recorders and subsequent AI and human-based identifications detected 106 species (87% of the total), followed by point counts (75 spp., 61%), transects (64 spp., 52%), and mist-net (54 spp., 44%). Despite the poor efficiency of mist-nets, they were key to collect specimens, blood samples, and feathers, and enabling long-term monitoring, resulting in 522 banded birds. We report stomach content and isotopic analyses, highlighting the importance of these samples for natural history. Multiple graduate and undergraduate students participated in different aspect of the research, reinforcing training and capacity-building. All datasets were deposited in public repositories. We emphasize the value of integrating monitoring and specimen-based approaches in biodiversity research.
