Global food production systems face unprecedented challenges driven by climate change, population growth, and urbanization, necessitating a fundamental approach towards resilience. This study evaluates the critical need for resilient water-food systems, with a specific focus on Iran, which is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. It defines resilient systems and the water-food nexus, alongside the principles of climate-resilient agriculture and the role of risk-based planning in water and food security. This study details the remarkable water crisis in Iran, characterized by severe water stress, extensive groundwater depletion, and extensive land degradation, all affected by climate change and systemic governance deficiencies. It also explores various innovations and technologies including advanced irrigation systems, drought-tolerant crop varieties, sustainable land management practices like agroforestry and conservation agriculture, and the emerging digital agriculture. While these innovations offer significant potential for water savings and increased water and land productivity, their widespread adoption in Iran faces substantial economic, institutional, and social barriers. By analyzing data and information of agricultural system, we propose strategic recommendations for integrated policy, investment, research, international cooperation, and an adaptive multi-stakeholder approach to ensure water and food security and sustainable future facing climate challenges.
