Rhamnaceae form an integral part of tropical and subtropical drylands, but their ecology in the face of increasingly severe manmade pressures is not yet documented. This investigation examined the composition, functional trait diversity, and environmental causes of Rhamnaceae assemblages in six selected tehsils) that varied from subtropical to tropical in Pakistan. Floristic and ecological characters, plant functional traits, and environmental data collected from 30 sites and were analyzed using the multivariate techniques. Tropical tehsils were characterized by increased invasion pressure (up to 30% of taxa were comprised of invasive species), nitrogen-enriched soil, and dominance by disturbance-tolerant therophytes, whereas subtropical tehsils were characterized by mixed life forms and sandy substrates. Native Rhamnaceae populations failed to spread widely in terms of distribution as opposed to the widespread distribution of invaders (a generalist). The results showed a sharp community divergence along a major environmental gradient (RDA Axis 1, 41.3% of variance), constituted by traffic density, soil nitrogen, and elevation. Conservation strategies need to be carried out with an integrated landscape-scale management planes that focuses on invasive species control and ensures the connectivity of habitats while reducing nutrient loading, using principles of functional ecology.
