A global issue of concern is water scarcity in arid environments that have been aggravated by climate change, population explosion, and industrialisation. This study examines long-term water management approaches to such areas, specifically, the combination of technical options and natural systems. Conventional practices, including dam building and groundwater extraction, will have temporary solutions, yet on a long-term basis; they will result in environmental impoverishment. Conversely, 90% of water is efficiently waste-less in desalination processes; however, energy-intensive, hence the use of 3.5-4.5 kWh/m3 of energy. On the same note, public reception and the cost of wastewater recycling (reused up to 70%) are a challenge. Rainwater harvesting is cheap; however, it is weather-dependent. The study addresses the interaction of the use of technological and nature-based solutions, which support water availability, prevent runoff and promote biodiversity. Successful implementation of those strategies is evident in case studies of Israel, Mexico and Singapore, which have used renewable energy integration, community involvement, and policy follow-ups to tackle water shortage issues. This study highlights that a more comprehensive resolution to tackling sustainable water management would be to include all three elements to ensure a sustainable management of water in arid areas in the long term.
