This study evaluated the reproductive and productive effectiveness of an intensive meat sheep breeding program in the semi-arid region of Brazil. The research was conducted at the Paraiba State Farming Research Corporation (EMEPA-PB). A total of 120 ewes were used, 80 of the Santa Ines genotype and 40 of the F1 Dorper x Santa Ines genotype, evaluated over three consecutive years. The characteristics assessed were fertility, prolificacy, total weight of offspring born per lambing ewe, and total weight of lambs weaned per lambing ewe. The F1 Dorper x Santa Ines ewes showed a higher fertility rate at lambing and a greater total weight of weaned offspring compared to the Santa Ines ewes. Body Condition Score (BCS) classes did not influence fertility rates for F1 Dorper x Santa Ines ewes. On the other hand, the BCS class <= 2.5 was superior to the other classes for Santa Ines ewes. However, prolificacy was not influenced by the genetic group. The F1 Dorper x Santa Ines ewes presented better reproductive and productive efficiency compared to the Santa Ines ewes. Hair sheep with a body condition score below 2.5 may exhibit high fertility and prolificacy rates.
