Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is a vital protein source. In Pakistan, broadleaf weed control poses challenges for chickpea farmers due to the lack of approved post-emergence herbicides. A five-year study was conducted to identify effective post-emergence herbicides in local and exotic chickpea germplasm. During the study, 743 chickpea genotypes were screened with 18 available post-emergence herbicides, followed by yield studies on selected top 3 herbicides: carfentrazone (50 g a.i. ha-1), flumetsulam (FTN; 20 g a.i. ha-1), and isoproturon (750 g a.i. ha-1). Among all treatments, FTN suppressed Chenopodium album and Convolvulus arvensis while effectively controlled Chenopodium murale and Asphodelus tenuifolius. At later growth stages, FTN demonstrated the most effective weed control overall. The genotypes Punjab-2008, D-16019, D-10004, D-17026 (desi chickpea), along with K-204016, K-16025 (kabuli chickpea), were identified as high-yielding and herbicide-tolerant. The application of FTN at 20 g a.i. ha-1 supports its use in chickpea for effective weed control and improved yield.
