Protocol and experimental in-field reflectance characterization of a Linear Fresnel solar field for process heat in Spain

Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants are generally placed in warm, arid or semi-arid regions with frequent dust and sand. Soiling inevitably hinders the plants' performance. This paper deals with the experimental characterization of a 37 kW Linear Fresnel (LFR) solar field located in Valencia (Spain). The spectral reflectance has been measured with the reflectometer Devices & Services 15R-USB. A full protocol has been established to measure and characterize the mean solar field reflectance. A 3-month experimental campaign has been performed to quantify the effect of soiling. The results show that the reflectance generally follows a normal distribution in same rows of the solar field. The main factors obtained with a multifactor ANOVA test are the rows, facets and the number of weeks since the last cleaning. The average solar field reflectance dropped down to 82.5 % after 3 months with no rain. The mean soiling rate is 0.16 %/day. Measuring around one point per facet helps reach less than 1 % error in most soiling conditions. The same methodology will be soon extended to a 4.2 MW solar field located in a brewery industry.
