This article deals with the current status of per capita water availability within a semi-arid state in Peninsular India, exploring potential factors influencing these dynamics. In this article, district-wise groundwater data and gauge station discharge data were collected from published reports and online portals, then recalculated to determine per capita water availability for each district. The land-use practice is found to be the major factor in regulating the district-level per capita water availability. The same is validated through statistical analysis of per capita water availability with the percentage of agricultural land (r = -0.77; p<0.001) and built-up land (r = -0.49; p<0.01), highlighting the negative impacts of human activities and with the percentage of forest cover (r = 0.73; p<0.001) and water bodies (r = 0.64; p<0.001) indicating the need of safeguarding inland water bodies and augmenting forest cover as proactive measures to enhance water availability. Similarly, based on the long-term climatic variables, particularly mean temperature variability, highest in Kutch (1.4 degrees C), followed by South Gujarat (1 degrees C) and Saurashtra (0.9 degrees C), further representing the role of climate on the per capita water availability. The present article aims to highlight the interplay of anthropogenic and climatic factors, as well as emphasise the positive role of natural ecosystems on water resources availability, particularly in the semi-arid tropical regions. Overall, the article contributes to the development of informed policies and practices necessary for effective water resource conservation and management in the study region, particularly in the northern part.
