Understanding the changing characteristics of climatic water balance (CWB) in arid regions is essential for assessing the impacts of climate change on water resource availability. This study investigates the spatiotemporal patterns of CWB on monthly, annual, and seasonal (monsoon and winter) timescales for the period 1961-2016 in the Balochistan province of Pakistan. This study utilizes gridded datasets, namely the Global Precipitation Climatology Center (GPCC) for precipitation and the Climatic Research Unit Time Series (CRU) for Potential Evapotranspiration. Furthermore, the Sen's Slope and Modified Mann-Kendall (M-MK) test statistical tools were used to analyze the trend dynamics in CWB. The results of the study revealed that the spatial patterns of CWB in Balochistan vary significantly across different months and seasons. In the annual and monsoon seasons, the highest CWB values are recorded between 20.4 and 29.9 mm/year and 40.5 to 61.6 mm/year, respectively, in the northeastern regions. The lowest values are recorded between - 3.7 and 0 mm/year and - 10.1 to 0 mm/year, respectively, in the southeastern regions of the province. In the winter season, the lowest CWB is observed in the eastern regions (0.2 to 4.1 mm/year), while the highest values are recorded in the southeastern regions (23 to 36.3 mm/year). The trend analysis of the study area showed significant increasing trends indicating increase in CWB in the southeastern regions over a large area and non-significant trends in the southwestern regions. During the winter season, increasing trends in CWB are observed in the northern and central areas, while the western regions show decreasing trends.
