The scarcity of groundwater has become a most alarming global problem of the arid and semi-arid zones. We employed geological and geomorphic indices to assess the groundwater potential zones (GWPZ) in the Ken River basin (KRB) of Central India. Ten parameters were computed to explore the availabilities of GWPZ in the KRB. Based on the assessment of various thematic layers, the low elevated (82-240 m) plains of the alluvium and Quaternary sediments of Lower KRB were weighted very high for groundwater potential. The high (432-509 m) to very high (509-752 m) elevated granitic and Vindhyan hills of the middle and upper reaches of the KRB and are considered poor for groundwater conditions. The low density (3-5) observed in the middle and low reaches (near Damoh, Panna and Banda) of the KRB is less susceptible for GWPZ. The high density of lineaments occurring close to the fractures and faults are more favourable for groundwater potential. The moderate (1134.84-1205.22 mm) rainfall zones occurred near Chhatarpur, Panna, Mahoba and adjoining areas are more prone for GWPZ. The very low (994.09-1064.46 mm) to low (1064.46-1134.84 mm) rainfall zones reported near Banda and surrounding areas of lower KRB are not favourable for groundwater. The ROC curves indicating 77.7% accuracy rate were used to validate the findings of this study. The output of this research may be utilised by planners and researchers to search out the location for future drilling of groundwater. These research findings can be applied on global scale to explore the possibilities of groundwater potential in any terrain and can minimize the excessive demand of groundwater.
