Guar growth and yield as affected by nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers

Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L. Taub.) is a legume of economic importance in the semi-arid/arid US Southwest due to the production of polysaccharide-rich seed endosperm used across a wide variety of industries. Nodule formation is often impacted in Aridisols, which is characteristic of the semi-arid and arid climate, thus posing concerns for optimal guar growth and yield. A two-year multilocational study was conducted in New Mexico, to evaluate the performance of guar under three rates of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) (0, 25, and 50 kg ha-1) fertilizers. Results indicate that plant growth and harvest parameters were mostly unaffected by N and/or P fertilizer treatments; however, guar seed yield was more affected by yearly variations in weather patterns and locations. Las Cruces, Clovis, and Tucumcari showed an increase in yield from 2019 to 2020 (7%, 30%, and 58%) with an overall average yield difference between 2019 and 2020 of about 30% at these three sites. Locational yields varied, with Los Lunas producing an average guar seed yield of 1307 kg ha-1 followed by Clovis at 1148 kg ha-1. Tucumcari and Las Cruces had an average guar seed yield of 1124 and 881 kg ha-1. Our study found guar production in New Mexico to require little to no N and P fertilizers, thus highlighting guar's potential as a low-input, alternative crop for the arid southwest.
