Pakistan is experiencing a significant fodder shortage during lean periods, which can be mitigated by incorporating new perennial crops into the country's farming systems. Mombasa grass (Megathyrsus maximus), an emerging fodder crop in Pakistan, currently needs published data, highlighting the urgent need to explore its potential in semi-arid climates. Mombasa is perennial grass and is expected to stay in the field for several years. Therefore, to address this gap, a pot experiment was conducted at the Wire House, Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, between October and December 2021 to investigate the effects of seed priming (P0 = Control, P1 = Hydropriming, P2 = Urea priming, P3 = Hydrogen peroxide priming) on the root characteristics of Mombasa grass. The experiment employed a completely randomized design, with each treatment replicated three times. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the significance of treatments while, HSD test at a 5% probability level was used to compare the treatments means. The results demonstrated significant effects of seed priming on various shoot and root traits of Mombasa grass. Urea priming (P2) showed the most pronounced effects, with increases in root volume (23.9%), root length (42.7%), root crude proteins (50%), chlorophyll content (27.45%), and tillers per plant (68.48%). The same treatment also resulted in reductions in leaf NDF (7%), leaf ADF (28.1%), and leaf crude fiber (21.8%). In conclusion, seed priming in Mombasa grass can enhance root system development and sustained production under diverse conditions over extended periods. Future research should focus on identifying the long term effects of seed priming on soil profile and characteristics in the field conditions.
