Plastic film mulching is a widely adopted technique in dryland farming that has the extra benefit of accumulating dew beneath the mulch at night and in the morning. Accumulating this dew is a cost-effective way to address water scarcity in dryland areas. Having detailed knowledge of the mechanism behind dew formation beneath plastic mulch, and how it is influenced by governing factors, is crucial for maximizing the benefits of the process. In this review, we look at how plastic mulching can accumulate dew, what affects dew measurement and collections which is especially useful in dry regions with limited water and high irrigation costs. We also explore using isotopic methods to measure the dew, providing a reliable way to understand its impact. The effectiveness of dew harvest under plastic mulch depends on various factors, such as nighttime humidity, air temperature changes, and wind speed. Additionally, by choosing the right type of plastic mulch based on factors like transparency, color, field setting, and thickness, farmers can create the best conditions for accumulating dew and make the most of the water for plant growth. Plastic mulching could be an effective way to reduce plant water stress in dryland areas with limited rainfall.
