Emerging Insights: Do Legumes Possess a Competitive Edge in Vegetation Restoration in the Desert?

Land desertification is an increasingly global environmental issue that poses a serious threat to the development of human society and people's well-being. Enhancing vegetation coverage on desertified land not only promotes reversal of desertification but also holds crucial ecological strategic significance for reducing carbon emissions. Therefore, based on a comprehensive literature review, our paper explores the unique advantages of legumes in vegetation restoration, specifically their ability to maximize nitrogen fixation potential. Previous studies have consistently demonstrated that legumes exhibit significant advantages in vegetation restoration, particularly through enhancing litter traits and optimizing soil microbial community composition when compared to non-legume species. Does this shed new light on the superior performance of legumes in vegetation restoration on sandy soil? This paper provides novel insights and ideas for future ecological restoration efforts in dryland areas while offering theoretical support for the management of desert ecosystems.
