Two new species of wool carder bees of the genus Anthidium are described here from the Middle East: A. marismortui Kasparek sp. nov. and A. zagrosense Kasparek sp. nov. Although they exhibit structural similarities, they are clearly distinguishable based on integument colouration and the DNA sequence of the barcoding region of the mitochondrial COI gene. Based on the available data, Anthidium marismortui is believed to be endemic to the semi-desert regions around the Dead Sea, occurring at elevations from sea level to approximately 200 m below sea level. In contrast, A. zagrosense was discovered approximately 2000 km away in the arid mountainous zones of the Zagros Mountains at elevations about 1650 m a.s.l. Both species are closely related to A. melanopygum and A. spiniventre, together forming a coherent genetic lineage proposed here as the "A. melanopygum species group." Haplotype network analysis suggests that A. melanopygum, which ranges from southeastern Europe through Turkey and the Caucasus to northern Iran, represents the ancestral lineage from which the other species have diverged.http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:1CFFBF3C-6143-4124-A52B-D0035DE61459
