Spatial Trends and Anomalies in Aerosol Levels Over Indian Peninsular Region and Their Relationship with Regional Meteorological Parameters

Global levels of atmospheric pollution have increased significantly over the last few decades, primarily post-industrialization. One of the major pollutants that plays an active role in climatic and ecological changes are particulate matter. The study aims to carry out the analysis of aerosol index from Sentinel-5P TROPOMI data, over the Indian Peninsular region from 2019 to 2023 and understand the role that different weather parameters like temperature, wind speed, precipitation play in aerosol distribution across the country. Multi-temporal trend analysis is carried out to derive inferences about major aerosol hotspots in India. Major findings point to the regions of Ladakh, Thar desert, Rann of Kutch, Western Ghats, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab affected by stubble burning, etc. Rise in temperature largely affects the concentration of aerosols, especially in North India. Parts of the Western Ghats see a rise in aerosol levels during the initial phases of south-west monsoon entering in the month of June, followed by a significant decrease with the progression of the monsoon across India. Windspeed conditions due to northeasterly trades, result in a rise in aerosols beyond the Himalayan ranges, particularly Ladakh region. Inter-annual variations reveal the impact of temperature anomaly and Covid lockdown, where variations in aerosol index from 2019 to 2023 are 63.83%, 39.42%, 129%, 184.29% and 85.71% respectively.
