  • Grassland degradation is an important manifestation of land desertification. Small rodents, due to their diverse species, high density and wide distribution range, have become one of the common and major biotic disturbance factors in grassland degradation. Recent studies on the impacts of small rodent disturbances on grassland biodiversity and ecosystem functions have emerged as a focal point in the field of ecology. This review addresses the main species of small rodents and their effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functions, the behavioral ecological processes of small rodents and their impacts on grassland vegetation, soil, and soil microorganisms, as well as the influence of small rodent burrow characteristics on grassland degradation. Additionally, the review summarizes current issues and future perspectives in this research field. This study provides a theoretical basis for the sustainable development and scientific management of grassland ecosystems.
