Beekeeping in natural areas and its effects on wild bees

Pollinators play a crucial role in ensuring the reproductive success of most flowering plants. The use of managed pollinators for crop pollination or honey production has the potential to impact wild pollinators. The honeybee, introduced worldwide as a managed pollinator, may compete with wild pollinators for resources and nesting sites, and may also transmit parasites and pathogens, potentially influencing their demography. We studied experimentally the effect of managed honeybees hives on wood-nesting bees in a dryland ecosystem in Villavicencio Nature Reserve, Mendoza, Argentina. In paired plots near and far from managed honeybee hives, we used wooden trap nests to study wood-nesting bee richness, nest pollen provision, and nest and brood cell abundance. For some solitary bee species, managed honeybees drove a shift in nest pollen provision to alternative plants, as well as increased nest abundance in some study species. Our findings have significant implications for the conservation of wild pollinator species, especially in natural habitats exposed to managed pollinators. Furthermore, this study offers some valuable recommendations for informed decision-making for the introduction of managed honeybee hives in natural areas.
