Exploring Genetic profile of Agaves (Agave spp.) from Mexican arid and semiarid land using molecular markers for cytochrome P450 gene

The genus Agave is an endemic species of plants from America, whose center of origin is Mexico. The agaves are plants considered as one of the greatest cultural and botanical resources of the country. Actually the uses more important are the production of fermented (pulque) and distilled beverages like (mezcal and tequila). Due its importance, the aim of this work was to analyze the genetic profile of twenty native agave individuals from eleven species using molecular markers, which were amplicons of mitochondrial cytochrome P450 gene. With the five primers used, approximately 125 fragments were amplified for each Agave species with a size between 50 and 1000 bp. Fragments of 150 to 130 bp were amplified for almost all species, specifically withCYP2B6F-CYP2C19R primer combination. The banding pattern of these amplicons was used to construct a dendrogram that showed three main clusters of Agave species: salmiana, tequilana, and americana. The results obtained in this work may serve as a reference in support of the identification of agave genotypes.
