Assessment and monitoring of land degradation indicators and processes using a geospatial approach

Anthropogenic land degradation is a major global issue, which demands effective land management and conservation strategies. This study focuses on the Pir Panjal Himalaya, Kashmir, India, and employs a variety of indicators and processes to map and monitor land degradation. The continuous exploitation of the land results in the deterioration of soils, water, and vegetation, which in turn impairs ecosystem functions. Using multi-date remote sensing data from 2001 to 2019, the study evaluated various indicators and processes of land degradation, such as vegetal degradation, water erosion, waterlogged fields, and anthropogenic impacts, associated with different land use and land cover (LULC) types. Each indicator and process is assigned a severity level. The results reveal that over 25% of the studied area suffered some form of land degradation during the study period, with agriculture-unirrigated water erosion at slight severity (Dw1) being the most prevalent and ubiquitous. The accuracy of the mapping of these indicators and processes was confirmed by ground validation at 86%. The methodologies and techniques applied in this research provide a significant contribution to the monitoring, evaluation, and modelling of land degradation at global national and regional scales. The insights gained from this research provide invaluable guidance for land development and soil conservation, and would help promote the preservation, restoration, and sustainable utilisation of land, thereby combating land degradation in the Himalayan Mountains.
