We assessed the diversity of native grasses, non-native grasses, and grassland birds in the Chihuahuan Desert in a historical-environmental context of anthropogenic pressure during the periods 1930-1964, 1965-1981, and 19822019. We analyzed the regional richness, beta diversity, and composition of 41 grassland bird species, 149 native grass species, and 60 non-native grass species, as well as the prevalence of native grasses and their correlation with grassland birds in each period. The results showed a reduction in beta diversity in the 3 assemblages over time, with no significant relationships between bird assemblage and native grass prevalence in the last period. This suggests that the current distribution of grassland birds is independent of grass type at the regional level. The expansion of non-native grasses in the Chihuahuan Desert, favored by public policies over time, has formed an assemblage of mixed grasslands, which currently does not affect the composition of grassland birds at the regional level. We suggest conducting local assessments to better understand the relationship between grassland birds and the different grasses present in the region.
