The waste from the use of synthetic dye in the textile industry leads to environmental concerns, causing serious human and animal health issues. Research on waste recycling efforts has been made. However, this process is still challenging and expensive. In this context, the development of natural dye and optimization of its extraction process have attracted attention recent attention. Indigofera plants are found in several genera and are excellent sources of dye, known as indigo dye. There are three main genera of indigo, Isatis spp., Persicaria tinctoria (Ait) Spach (Polygonum tinctorium Ait), and Indigofera spp. that are used to produce industrial Indigo. These can be used as a dye by clothing manufacturers. In addition to being a potential commercial crop in the near future, indigo is a legume and can be used to further diversify the existing cropping systems in the U.S. In the U.S. Southern Great Plains, this crop could be an alternative crop to diversify and sustain the cotton-based cropping system that is predominant in the region. However, little research has been conducted regarding the agronomics and genetics of this crop. Therefore, this paper will review the current status on the genetics and agronomics of the industrial Indigofera sp.
