  • Xerophytic thicket (XT) is a shrubby vegetation found in the semi-arid southern and south-western Madagascar. Above ground biomass (AGB) is a key element to understand how this ecosystem is operating and then to design and implement any sustainable management strategy. This study aimed to build AGB allometric models for Malagasy XT shrubs. One hundred and ninety-eight individuals belonging to 20 XT common species were harvested. The models linked AGB to height, diameter at breast height (DBH), basal diameter, stem number and wood specific gravity. Empirical models taking into account the shrub architecture (multistemmed with single basal stem and first branches below a height of 1.3 m, multistemmed with multiple basal stems and shrubs with first branches over a height of 1.3 m) are more efficient to predict XT shrub AGB than the pantropical tree AGB model.
