Effect of adding rubber aggregates on the behaviour of compacted sand concrete

The development of road infrastructures and lack of gravel resources prompted the proposal of new alternative materials for road construction, based only on the use of sand, namely compacted dune sand concrete. The present experimental work relates to the study that investigated the effects of partial replacement of dune sand by rubber aggregates on the mechanical properties of compacted sand concrete. Four volumetric substitutions of sand have been used (10, 30, 40 and 50%) and four compaction energies to improve the mechanical characteristics of the compacted sand concrete with rubber aggregates. The incorporation of rubber aggregates decreased the mechanical resistances of the concretes of the tested mixes. This diminution of mechanical resistance could be attenuated by increasing the energy of compaction.
