The Uganda Atlas - Evidence of Uganda's changing environment
The Uganda Atlas of Our Changing Environment, prepared by the National Environmental Management Authority of Uganda, provides extensive scientific evidence of Uganda's changing environment. Modelled after Africa: Atlas of our Changing Environment previously published by UNEP, the Uganda Atlas seeks to safeguard the country's environment and inspire decision makers to action.

Integrated Watershed and Coastal Areas Management (IWCAM) Atlas
In the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS), high population densities, combined with population growth, urbanization and increased development, particularly residential and tourist resort development, has led to the contamination of underlying aquifers and surface water, and deterioration of coastal water quality. The overall objective of this Project is to strengthen the commitment and capacity of the participating countries to implement an integrated approach to the management of watersheds and coastal areas. The long-term goal is to enhance the capacity of the countries to plan and manage their aquatic resources and ecosystems on a sustainable basis. In particular, project activities will be focusing on improvements in integrated freshwater basin-coastal area management on each island of the regional groupings of Caribbean SIDS.

Issue No. 5: Patrick Binns, Westbrook Associates LLC: Opportunities and Challenges Facing Farmers in Transitioning to a Green Economy Agriculture Practice, April 2012
This policy paper has been prepared to highlight the key opportunities and challenges confronting farmers throughout the world as they consider and adopt practices that contribute to green economic development, poverty eradication and improved food security. It focuses on the role of farmers in green economic development and how a transition to a green economy could benefit farmers. It also describes the primary means to accomplish sustainable farming and discusses key policies and public/private investments that would advance a ‘green agriculture’ transition. It is intended to catalyze multi-stakeholder dialogues that place farmers at the center of international efforts to assess costs and benefits and to build a consensus for action at local, national, regional and global scales.

Review of Gender Mainstreaming in UNEP
The gender mainstreaming review takes place at a time when major reforms are being implemented within UNEP through its current Medium Term Strategy (MTS) 2010- 2013. This review has been requested to critically assess UNEP's progress in ensuring gender equality at the organizational level, as well as in mainstreaming gender throughout UNEP activities, promoting equality among women and men in terms of access to and control over environmental resources.

The effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in smokers with cerebrovascular disease: A systematic review
Objective The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions (SCIs) for increasing cessation rates in smokers with cerebrovascular disease. Design Systematic review. Two independent reviewers searched information sources and assessed studies for inclusion/exclusion criteria. Eligibility criteria for included studies Randomised control trials, conducted prior to the 22 May 2012 investigating SCIs in smokers with cerebrovascular disease, were included. No age or ethnicity limitations were applied in order to be as inclusive as possible. Methods We followed the PRISMA statement approach to identify relevant randomised control studies. Due to the variability of interventions used in the reported studies, a meta-analysis was not conducted. Results Of 852 identified articles, 4 articles fit the inclusion criteria describing the outcome in 354 patients. The overall cessation rate with an SCI was 23.9% (42 of 176) while without one was 20.8% (37 of 178). Conclusions There are a limited number of reported intervention studies that explore this area of secondary stroke prevention. Furthermore, of those intervention studies that were found, only two implemented evidence-based approaches to smoking cessation. A meta-analysis was not conducted because of the variability of interventions in the reported studies. Larger studies with homogeneous interventions are needed to determine how effective SCIs are in increasing cessation in smokers with established cerebrovascular disease.

Terminal evaluation of the UNEP GEF project: Support to the implementation of the regional environment action plan in Central Asia
This is a terminal evaluation of a UNEP GEF project implemented between 2005 and 2012. The objective of the project was to implement key aspects of the Regional Environmental Action Plan for Central Asia and to create enabling conditions for its further implementation through capacity building and pilot demonstrations in Sustainable Land Management. The evaluation had two primary purposes: to provide evidence of results to meet accountability requirements; and to promote learning, feedback, and knowledge sharing through results and lessons learned among UNEP, GEF and other partners.

The role of surgeon volume on patient outcome in total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review of the literature
BACKGROUND: A number of factors have been identified as influencing total knee arthroplasty outcomes, including patient factors such as gender and medical comorbidity, technical factors such as alignment of the prosthesis, and provider factors such as hospital and surgeon procedure volumes. Recently, strategies aimed at optimizing provider factors have been proposed, including regionalization of total joint arthroplasty to higher volume centers, and adoption of volume standards. To contribute to the discussions concerning the optimization of provider factors and proposals to regionalize total knee arthroplasty practices, we undertook a systematic review to investigate the association between surgeon volume and primary total knee arthroplasty outcomes. METHODS: We performed a systematic review examining the association between surgeon volume and primary knee arthroplasty outcomes. To be included in the review, the study population had to include patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty. Studies had to report on the association between surgeon volume and primary total knee arthroplasty outcomes, including perioperative mortality and morbidity, patient-reported outcomes, or total knee arthroplasty implant survivorship. There were no restrictions placed on study design or language. RESULTS: Studies were variable in defining surgeon volume ('low': 5 to >70 total knee arthroplasty per year). Mortality rate, survivorship and thromboembolic events were not found to be associated with surgeon volume. We found a significant association between low surgeon volume and higher rate of infection (0.26% - 2.8% higher), procedure time (165 min versus 135 min), longer length of stay (0.4 - 2.13 days longer), transfusion rate (13% versus 4%), and worse patient reported outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest a trend towards better outcomes for higher volume surgeons, but results must be interpreted with caution.-

Sahel atlas of changing landscapes: tracing trends and variations in vegetation cover and soil condition
This atlas aims to illustrate a rigorous scientific basis for understanding processes of landscape change in the Sahel and describes landscapes climate vegetation and trends in vegetation and soil health. The atlas provides a pictorial overview of the application of land degradation surveillance science based approach to land health monitoring and assessment Systematic sampling and observation of ground conditions are combined with new technology for rapid soil characterization and with fine to moderate resolution satellite imagery to provide powerful inference about soil vegetation and socioeconomic conditions at local to regional scales.
