Today, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, and Italy's Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, held the first bilateral Energy Dialogue between the two countries at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers Meeting in Toronto, Ontario.
The meeting set the stage for closer partnership in critical minerals and nuclear energy, while also exploring additional priority areas such as liquefied natural gas (LNG); sustainable fuels including renewable and low carbon hydrogen and sustainable biofuels; clean technologies; decarbonization; and carbon management.
The two ministers focused their discussion on the implementation of the Critical Minerals Action Plan, and identifying bilateral opportunities under the Critical Minerals Production Alliance, with a focus on concrete projects where co-investment opportunities could be explored, including through the Made in Italy Fund. They also reaffirmed their commitment to continue exploring opportunities for scientific, regulatory, and industrial collaboration, leveraging both countries’ sectorial activities and expertise.
Both ministers underscored their commitment to continue high-level engagement, with plans to advance the dialogue at the senior officials’ level and pursue business-to-business meetings that will further capitalize on investment opportunities and strengthen the strategic energy partnership.
A joint statement announcing the launch of the dialogue and outlining the next steps has been released, marking an important milestone in deepening bilateral cooperation between Canada and Italy.
