Water resources plays an essential role in the socio-economic development in the city of Urumqi, which is the largest city located in the arid region in Northwest China. Due to the declining availability of freshwater resources, reclaimed water has become increasingly prominent as an alternative water source. In this study, the status of wastewater treatment and reclaimed water utilization in Urumqi was investigated and a set of measures for maintaining the quality and quantity of reclaimed water were proposed. After analyzing the reclaimed water supply and urban landscape water demand in Urumqi, we developed optimization models to examine three water distribution options to supply reclaimed water for the urban landscape. Based on the study results, the least costly transportation plan that was capable of meeting the amount of water required for the landscape in the Urumqi was recommended. This case study provides a scientific basis for the implementation of measures to efficiently use reclaimed water and maintain ecological security in arid Northwest China.
