Paleoclimatic indications of loess deposits in the eastern margin of Chinese loess plateau

Loess-paleosol sequences constitute key archives for reconstructing paleoclimatic evolution. Based on highresolution magnetic susceptibility (MS), grain-size, and organic carbon isotope records of a 50-m-thick loesspaleosol sequence from Tuban (TB) section in the eastern margin of Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), this study reconstructs paleoclimatic evolution of this region and evaluates the topographic modulation of monsoon dynamics over the last 245 ka. Four stages of paleoclimate evolution can be summarized as follows for the study site: (1) a warmest and wettest period dominated by the strong EASM in MIS7 (ca. 245-190 ka); (2) a gradual transition to cold-dry with strengthened EAWM occurred in MIS6 (ca. 190 to 128 ka), including a slightly warm interval (ca. 170-162 ka) and a dry event (ca. 160-150 ka); (3) a warm-wet episode was under the strengthened EASM in MIS5 (ca. 128-73 ka); and (4) despite an overall long-term drying and cooling trend during the last glacial period (ca. 73-11 ka), a distinct warm-wet interval occurred during the mid-last glacial (ca. 40-30 ka). By comparing the paleoclimatic characteristics of TB region with those of Luochuan (LC) region at central CLP, it is found that the Lvliang and Taihang Mountains exert a pronounced orographic influence on limiting East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) moisture penetration during interglacial periods and amplifying East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) intensity during glacial periods, thereby leading the climate at TB region to be consistently colder and drier than that at LC.
