The spatiotemporal evolution of the southeast-northwest climate gradient across East Asia and its response to global warming remain poorly constrained, despite their crucial importance for understanding East Asian monsoon dynamics. Eolian deposits on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) are valuable archives for reconstructing the evolution of the East Asian monsoon and the aridification of inland Asia. This study uses chemical weathering indices (e.g., CIA, CPA, Na/K, and Rb/Sr) and magnetic parameters (e.g., chi, chi(fd), and chi(ARM)) of <5 mu m grain-size fraction of eolian sediments from the central and western CLP to reconstruct spatiotemporal climate variations between the late Pliocene warm period and the late Pleistocene interglacial stages. The higher chemical weathering intensity on the CLP during the late Pliocene suggests a warmer and wetter climate relative to late Pleistocene interglacials. Furthermore, spatial analysis reveals significantly stronger chemical weathering and pedogenesis on the central CLP than on the western CLP during the late Pliocene, indicating the early existence of a modern-like climate gradient. The pronounced decrease in spatial climatic contrasts from the warmer late Pliocene to the late Pleistocene interglacials highlights steeper climate gradients under warmer conditions. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential response of the East Asian monsoon system to ongoing global warming.
