Modeling soil degradation in a semi-arid region using GIS techniques and the RUSLE model: case study of the Hassan Addakhil Dam watershed (Ziz Basin, Morocco)

This study aims to assess annual soil erosion and sediment production in the upper watershed of the Oued Ziz, located upstream of the Hassan Addakhil Dam in the Dr & acirc;a-Tafilalet region of southeastern Morocco. This watershed is characterized by rugged topography, low vegetation cover, and increasing anthropogenic pressure, and is further vulnerable to water erosion phenomena due to climate change. To achieve our objective, a synergistic approach was implemented using Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model. RUSLE factor maps were generated using geological, topographical, and climatic data sets. As a result, the analysis revealed a soil loss ranging from 0 to 89.15 t/ha/year, with an average loss of approximately 3.69 t/ha/year. In addition, the synthetic map highlights varying levels of erosion sensitivity across the watershed, with notably higher sensitivity observed in the western region, particularly around the Jbel Aberdouz area, principally due to its steep slope and sparse vegetation cover. Ultimately, the research findings offer noteworthy scientific insights for policymakers and planners, enabling the development of sustainable and robust strategies for managing soil and water resources. Therefore, implementing soil and water conservation (SWC) strategies should be guided by the severity of soil erosion, ensuring that the most vulnerable areas receive prioritized intervention.
