Wheat productivity is severely affected by drought. However, applying organic amendments may improve crop growth by improving soil properties and plant response under drought stress. This study evaluated the effects of organic amendments on wheat under water stress conditions to discover viable techniques to improve crop resilience and productivity in water-scarce situations. This study evaluated the effects of organic amendments on wheat to identify sustainable approaches for enhancing crop resilience and productivity under water stress conditions. Wheat cultivars (Faisalabad-08 and Sehar-06) were subjected to water stress (60% field capacity) and treated with four different organic amendments: farmyard manure (124 g), poultry manure (124 g), press mud (124), and compost (124 g) per pot. Compost emerged as the most effective organic amendment as it greatly increased plant growth, physiological indices, antioxidant defences, and nutrient absorption compared to other organic amendments. Compost showed the most substantial improvement, increasing relative chlorophyll content (SPAD values) by 51% and 54%, Membrane Stability Index (MSI) by 55% and 62%, and Relative Water Content (RWC) by 90% and 56% also boosting K/Na by 195% and 168%, and Ca/Na by 306% and 265% over untreated controls in Faisalabad-08 and Sehar-06, respectively. Antioxidant enzyme activity increased under drought, but significantly reduced by compost treatment, with Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) falling by 32% and 33%, Peroxidase Dismutase (POD) by 25% and 23%, and Catalase (CAT) by 46% and 47% in Faisalabad-08 and Sehar-06. Compost treatment increased nitrogen levels by 90% and 122%, phosphorus by 119% and 169%, and potassium by 88% and 79% in Faisalabad-08 and Sehar-06, respectively, under water stress conditions. Among these amendments, compost showed the highest positive effect with the effectiveness of amendments ranking as Compost > Poultry Manure > Farmyard Manure > Press Mud. The findings showed that compost was an effective technique for increasing wheat resistance to water stress, providing a long-term option to increase crop output and health in arid and semi-arid locations.
