  • Indoor humidity has a direct impact on thermal comfort and therefore affects building energy performance. Conventional mechanical humidity control systems consume additional energy to regulate indoor humidity. To explore a passive alternative, this study introduces a highperformance moisture buffering hydrogel as an innovative passive strategy for indoor humidity regulation. The moisture buffering behavior of LiBr@PAAM was experimentally characterized, and the measured Moisture Buffer Value was 25.5 +/- 0.2 g/(m2 & sdot;%RH), which is more than one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional building materials. A one dimensional transient moisture sorption model was developed and validated against moisture buffering measurements to describe the moisture dynamics of the material. This model was then incorporated into a simplified and idealized building-level moisture balance simulation to provide an indicative upper-bound estimate of the potential impact of the hydrogel on dehumidification demand under different climatic conditions. Results indicate that the hydrogel absorbs indoor moisture gains during occupied periods and can be passively regenerated at night by dry outdoor air in arid and semiarid climates, thereby reducing the modeled dehumidification demand under favorable ventilation conditions. In hot and humid climates, regeneration is limited by high nighttime humidity, resulting in a reduced upper-bound potential for decreasing dehumidification demand. These findings demonstrate the potential of this material for passive indoor humidity regulation and provide an indicative upper-bound assessment of its possible dehumidification demand implications under different climatic conditions.
