The research focused on the potential morphometric factors contributing to the rare flood occurrences in a data-scarce region of northeastern Morocco. It predominantly utilized the GRADEX method alongside GIS tools to assess possible flooding and analyze watershed characteristics. Initially, the study evaluated discharge levels for various return periods and subsequently explored the morphometric features that contribute to flood events. It highlighted natural factors that accelerate water flow, leading eventually to its fast accumulation downstream of the rivers. The results indicated that rounded basin shapes facilitated higher flow rates, whereas elongated basins resulted in reduced flow. We identified the concept of concentration time as a crucial element in increasing flow and promoting flood development. The analysis of drainage and hydrographic densities underscored the significance of flushing processes occurring on impermeable marl surfaces. The employed methodology proved effective in pinpointing the key factors that contribute to rising floodwater levels. The application of these tools may serve to effectively inform decision-makers in managing flood risks. This study advocates the use of this method to improve future flood predictions and to investigate the influence of morphometric parameters on flooding scenarios.
