Great Barrier Reef valued at $95 billion, supports 77,000 jobs

A new report shows the Great Barrier Reef is now worth $95 billion. This is a 69% increase since 2017.

The report highlights how important the Reef is to Australia’s economy, environment and communities. It supports 77,000 full-time jobs. It contributes $9 billion to the economy each year.

The report findings reiterate the importance of strong investments to support the Reef. 

The Australian Government is investing a record $1.2 billion to protect and manage the Reef. 

This funding is:

  • improving water quality in the Reef’s catchment
  • supporting sustainable fishing
  • restoring habitats and strengthen the Reef’s ecosystems
  • delivering new science and research to help the Reef adapt to climate change

This funding is delivered through the Reef Trust. The Reef Trust is Australia’s investment program for the Reef. It aims to fund programs to ensure the Reef is healthy and resilient for future generations.
